Explore how Rhode Island Trout Unlimited (TU) preserves watershed ecosystems and cold-water species using Hanna Instruments Portable Meter for critical water quality monitoring
Rhode Island TU represents Trout Unlimited in RI and has over 400 members and that number continues to grow today. Chartered in the mid-1970’s as Narragansett Chapter 225 of Trout Unlimited, Rhode Island TU was formed by the confluence of the Narragansett and Northern RI Trout Unlimited Chapters in 2017. Rhode Island Trout Unlimited helps to conserve, protect, restore, and sustain the watersheds of RI for future generations to enjoy. Their mission is to improve watershed ecosystems and sustain cold-water species, primarily Brook Trout, through conservation, education, and community engagement.
Rhode Island TU regularly monitors the water quality of three RI watershed areas including Falls River, Flat River, and Wood River. Rhode Island TU frequently checks important environmental water quality parameters using Hanna Instruments Portable Meter. With accurate and consistent temperature and dissolved oxygen digital readings, Rhode Island TU is better able to identify thermal barriers and make modifications to the streambank with their Trees for Trout program.
Partnering with the University of Rhode Island’s (URI) Watershed Watch Program, Rhode Island TU is further able to understand the water quality of these watersheds. The URI Watershed Watch Program team uses one of our Automatic Titrators for precise water quality monitoring testing. This helps Rhode Island TU ensure water quality, make informed conservation decisions, and receive grant approval for watershed improvements based on credible data.
"By having Hanna Instruments as part of that program, it really helps us. We can't take and make a strong case for a grant to remove the dam unless we can accurately measure the temperature coming out of the dam."
Glenn Place, President of Rhode Island Trout Unlimited
